Dear Mr. Toms,

I have completed a qualifying law degree at the University of [university] with an upper second class grade in [year]. I am interested in undertaking a training contract with Bate C. Toms.

I am attracted to Bate C. Toms because the relatively small size of the London office and the collegiate culture of the firm will enable me to receive a broad exposure across the firm’s different practice areas and allow me to receive training with a focus on my personal interests, viewpoints and career goals.

I find the firm’s strong global capabilities appealing because this will expose me to interesting cross-jurisdictional problems and enable me to collaborate with the firm’s overseas offices. This will allow me to contribute my ideas and perspectives and work in integrated teams to develop ideas into effective and tailored solutions for clients. Operating on an international platform will enable me to gain an understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by clients around the world and how different jurisdictions work and interact with each other. This knowledge will help me to develop into a well-rounded international lawyer and enable me to provide a seamless service to clients.

I find Bate C. Toms’s focus on Eastern and Central Europe very appealing because it will present me with an exposure to emerging markets and challenging problems. This, together with the firm’s creative thinking and in-depth industry knowledge will allow me to think about the clients’ problems creatively and gain a deep exposure to challenges and opportunities facing clients in different industries will make for a very empowering and interesting environment.

Bate C. Toms will provide me with challenging and quality work through the firm’s quality and diverse customer base. This will vest me with variety and interesting and challenging work as I will have to operate at the forefront of legal and commercial developments facing the firm’s clients on a daily basis.

I wish to pursue a career as an international solicitor because every day is varied, challenging and engaging. At university, I enjoyed applying and manipulating law to hypothetical scenarios during my modules and mooting competitions because it stimulated my intellectual curiosity since every situation was never the same and required a different approach. As commercial matters span many areas of law, industries and borders, they demand the application of lateral thinking and extensive problem-solving. In turn, this would see me work in integrated teams with a commercial focus on the problem in a quick-paced environment with approaching deadlines. At [law firm] , I especially enjoyed working in teams across different time zones to solve commercial problems. This produced more interesting work, greater variety and a wider group of experts to learn from which made my work environment stimulating and rewarding.

I believe that I am a strong candidate for a training contract with Bate C. Toms because I have extensive legal experience and the relevant skill-set which will enable me to successfully operate on an international platform and deal with sophisticated commercial issues facing clients globally. I am commercially minded and have an international outlook, strong problem solving and analytical skills which will enable me to understand individual client requirements and the environment in which they operate and deal with their unique problems across a broad spectrum of industries. At [law firm], I accompanied solicitors and the client to a board of directors EGM in Amsterdam in my capacity as an interpreter. During the meeting, I gave a presentation in order to explain the local nuances of the [language] market affecting the client’s business. This helped the solicitors to produce a solution for the client in a quick-paced environment. I am a good team player and have an ability to express my ideas in a simple and understandable manner. At [law firm], I successfully liaised with the firm’s international offices and contributed my ideas and perspectives to add value to my work. I am very enthusiastic, entrepreneurial and focused which will allow me to bring new perspectives to the table and use my initiative to add value to my work. At university, I have established an amateur [sport] club for the first time in fifty years, despite strong opposition from the university, by developing a new approach and thinking about problems creatively. I possess good client-facing skills through which I will be able to deliver a good client service and work with the client to understand their business, objectives and legal requirements. I possess leadership and organisational skills which will allow me to prioritise competing deadlines and manage my time and resources effectively. I am currently running an events management business which requires me to deal with a range of diverse issues and make important decisions on a daily basis. This has developed my ability to manage my workload effectively and operate successfully in quick-paced and demanding environments.

Having worked for a number of leading legal firms, I can attest to the importance of building and maintaining professional relationships. This, coupled with my fluency in languages would make me a valuable asset when working on cross-border transactions or with international clients.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to attend an interview for which I am available at your convenience.

Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,
