Please explain why you have decided to pursue a career as a solicitor and why you have chosen Weil, Gotshal & Manges.

I aspire to pursue a career as a solicitor because it will allow me to assume the role of a project manager and will vest me with early responsibility. Given that commercial law is both transactional and ongoing suggests that I will have to build a rapport with the client and apply strong communication skills coupled with high technical ability when forming a clear picture of the client’s needs and objectives and then explaining what may well be a complex area of law when advising on the best solution. This may require me to liaise with a number of legal departments thus making each day unique, enjoyable and fulfilling work experience.

I am attracted to Weil, Gotshal & Manges because it is a premier international law firm, with over 1,300 lawyers worldwide and a reputation for providing first-class US and European legal advice. Throughout the advanced competition law module I studied US, EC and UK jurisdictions in the field of ‘refusal to supply’ intellectual property rights. Studying multiple jurisdictions concurrently has enabled me to compare and contrast them alongside each other. A training contract with the firm will avail me with an opportunity to work on cross-border matters, liaising with, or travelling to, the firm’s offices in Europe, Asia and the US. I would particularly like to do a seat in the US, especially in the restructuring department because I was very fascinated to learn that the firm is involved in every major reorganisation case in the US, including Lehman Brothers, AIG and Enron. I could be involved in one of the World’s largest high profile deals which would increase my personal development in my capacity as a solicitor and would provide me with an opportunity to interchange between [language], [language] and English languages when working on cross-border cases.

Recognised as one of the leading practices in its field, the firm is involved in virtually every major reorganisation case in the US (including Lehman Brothers, AIG and Enron) and in major international out-of-court debt restructurings. We are building on this market-leading reputation throughout Europe, focusing on transactional restructurings and insolvencies of multinational companies such as Icelandic bank Kaupthing.
