Dear [recruiter’s name],
I have completed a law degree at the [University] with an upper [grade] class degree. I am applying for a training contract to commence in [year] advertised on Latestlawjobs.com.
I have developed my interest in law throughout my academic career at [university]. In my second year I have completed a [course name] where I was working in a group on a mock-trial case involving a breach of contract. This course has allowed me to incorporate my knowledge of law in a simulated solicitor’s environment. I genuinely enjoyed the team work and problem-solving elements of the course. As follows, I am actively involved in mooting competitions at the university as I genuinely enjoy debating and disputing a legal position of a client. Applying law to a particular scenario stimulates my intellectual curiosity and arouses a sense of passion in me when it comes to communicating the legal argument to the judge.
I am interested in corporate and commercial law because it will allow me to assume the role of a project manager and will afford me early responsibility. Given that commercial law is both transactional and ongoing, it is clear that I will have to build a rapport with the client and apply strong communication skills coupled with high technical ability when forming a clear picture of the client’s needs and objectives and then explaining what may well be a complex area of law when advising on the best solution. This may require me to liaise with a number of legal departments thus making each day a unique, enjoyable and fulfilling work experience.
I am attracted by the small intake of trainees which I feel will offer me bespoke training that is individually tailored to my interests, experience and aptitude. Small teams also suggest that I will have increased responsibility and operate as a lawyer from day one in an informal and collegial working environment. More importantly, I will receive the excitement and challenge of working on high value, complex transactions and disputes, in the size of office where everyone knows who you are. For me this will mean getting involved in real work from the start whereby I will be able to add something to the cases I work on. This environment will unquestionably foster my professional and personal growth in my capacity as a lawyer.
I am especially interested in White & Case LLP because I am attracted by its expertise in cross-border transactions as well as its provision of client-based work. Recently, I have completed an advanced competition law module where I found the Microsoft decision of particular interest, especially in the split between US and EC jurisdictions regarding consumer welfare. White & Case LLP will present me with an opportunity to do a seat abroad. During my time at [law firm] I specifically enjoyed working with [language] clients, and I would like to use this interest as an opportunity of expanding my legal knowledge into the [language] jurisdiction. Undertaking an international secondment will therefore allow me to compare and contrast different legal disciplines alongside one another. I will also be able to follow all deals or trials worked on right through to the end and maintain a rapport with clients, thus making the work both personally and professionally rewarding.
What distinguished White and Case from other firms is the fact that White and Case takes into account personal preferences when allocating seats to trainees. I think this is very important in terms of my career development because it will allow me to pursue an area in which I have developed an interest. I will have an opportunity to develop great expertise in the area of my interest through the supervision of partners in a very close-knit teams and a small office which will thus provide me with a steep learning trajectory. Being a member of such a team will allow me to develop real relationships with clients and a genuine in-depth understanding of their business. This will therefore increase my sectoral expertise and allow me to deliver quick and efficient solutions to client problems.
Having worked for a number of private clients at leading legal firms, [law firm] and [law firm], I can attest to the importance of building and maintaining professional relationships. This, coupled with my fluency in [language], English and [language], would make me a valuable asset when working on cross-border transactions or with international clients.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to attend an interview for which I am available at your convenience.
Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,

Please give details of any interests and extra-curricular activities, including any positions of responsibility and achievements*
I am a third year law representative for the student-staff liaison committee where I am responsible for communicating student concerns about the operation of the [university] Law School to staff in regular meetings. As a lawyer I strongly feel that I should be active in the development of the legal profession, and as a famous judge Lord Denning said ‘the development of our legal profession should start from universities’. I find this role both personally and professionally rewarding. I am a very pro-active member of the [university] [language] Speaking Society ([SOCIETY INITIALS]) whereby I am actively involved in organising and managing [SOCIETY INITIALS] socials. I greatly enjoy working with [SOCIETY INITIALS] because it allows me to introduce new members to the society and introduce people to [language] culture which helps to increase diversity at the University and make it a more sociable and open community. I am a very zealous member of the ‘[society]’ society as I feel that it is the task of humans to help the environment. In the past I have been in projects aimed to save electricity and helping the local wildlife, such as switching off unused computers in the library during vacation breaks. I am regularly involved in mooting competitions where I get the opportunity to exercise my analytical and advocacy skills amongst like-minded individuals in a competitive environment. On a sportier note, I greatly enjoy amateur [Sport]. With over [sport performances] I have [done the sport] at national level and represented England in the [tournament name]. Currently, I am responsible for training a large group of students at the [University]. I find that [Sport] helps to increase my discipline and determination which I keenly shared with other students by starting up a [Sport] club.
